2024 JSIP Best Presentation Award

October 2, 2024

We happily announce that based on the assessment and scores provided by the JIFRESSE Summer Internship Program (JSIP) Committee members and mentors, Annie Rosen won the 2024 JSIP Best Presentation Award. The formal presentation of the award will occur in conjunction with a JIFRESSE event.

Annie Rosen is a third-year graduate student in the Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Department at UCLA, where she is advised by Prof. Rong Fu. Her love for atmospheric sciences began as a youth soccer player in Olympia, Washington. At practice, her coach introduced "cloud breaks," where the team would lie on their backs and identify shapes in the clouds. In 2018, Annie graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Mathematics, gaining research experience in astrophysics, neuroscience, and psychology. After her undergraduate studies, she spent three years applying data science to various fields in industry.

Annie's research investigated how large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns influence land-atmosphere interactions and soil-moisture-precipitation (SMP) feedbacks in the Southern Great Plains during the warm season. By applying a Self-Organizing Map approach, she identified prevalent atmospheric circulation patterns associated with SMP feedbacks.  Her outstanding work not only advances scientific understanding but also offers practical implications for managing drought conditions in critical agricultural regions.

Upon receiving the award, Annie responded: "I am honored to receive this award. A big thank you to everyone who helped facilitate the JIFRESSE internship program, and a special thanks to my mentors (Longtao Wu, Yizhou Zhuang, and Rong Fu) for their valuable insights."

Please join us in congratulating Annie on her exceptional achievement!
