Roger Wakimoto was appointed as the Vice Chancellor for Research at UCLA effective July 1, 2017. Vice Chancellor Wakimoto was a Professor (1983-2005), Vice Chair (1993-6), and Chair (1996-2000) of UCLA’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. In 2005, he was appointed as the Director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research’s (NCAR) Earth Observing Laboratory; subsequently, in 2010, Vice Chancellor Wakimoto was appointed as Director of NCAR. During this time, he held a faculty position at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Vice Chancellor Wakimoto’s research expertise is on mesoscale meteorology with particular interests in severe convective storms and radar meteorology. In recognition of his scientific achievements and leadership, he has received awards from the Environmental Protection Agency for research on air pollution, as well as the Clarence Leroy Meisinger Award from the American Meteorological Society for his contributions to understanding mesoscale weather events.
